Basic Gameplay
After creating a newcharacter, you will spawn in Newbie Village. Move around with the arrow keys, [wasd], or pressing a d-pad direction in the lower left. You can read the tutorial signs by facing them and pressing the Action button (or the [spacebar] key).
Click an enemy to target them for fighting and walk next to them. If you get hurt there is a healing fountain just above the rats in Newbie Village. Make sure to eat something occasionally to keep your health regeneration up.
Follow the road to find rocks, trees, and bushes and use your bare hands to get resources like stone, wood, tinder, and flintto build simple weapons or tools.
When youclick the build button it will showa list of objects you cancraft with your current resources. When your resources change the build list will also change. Building and equipping an axe will increase your chopping success. A pickaxe will increase your mining success.
Click the Character and Quests buttonto get some simple tasks to complete for experience. When you reach level 5 you can leave to the north and explore beyond Newbie Village. You wont be able to return when you hit level 15.
Some animals are hostile but if you run from them they will eventually give up on chasing you. Only fight small enemies when you are just starting the game. Later on you can take on snakes and wolves. Loot dropped by creatures generally lasts 90 seconds. When you slay an enemy you gain some Myst which you can use to purchase upgrades from the Character menu. Getting ‘pack rat’ will increase your carrying capacity and ‘scholar’ will increase your experience gain.
Hunger
Your food bar represents how full you are and will decrease over time while you are moving or using items. Your health regeneration is based off of how full your hunger bar is. If the bar is completely empty then your health will slowly drain to 25%. Eating food will increase your hunger bar, depending on nutritional value of food and whether or not it’s cooked. Many food items can be cooked by facing a fire and dropping the food. To retrieve the food just press space on the fire.
Food eventually gets old. Meats tend to expire before plants. Old food gives less nutrition and in some cases takes away nutrition. If you combine stacks of fresh food their expiration date will average out. Expired food wont combine with fresh food. After a long while old food will rot and disappear so you can’t hoard it forever.
Farming
Certain animals will breed with one another under special conditions. Animals need to be well fed to be in good shape for breeding: around 70-90% full (you can see their food amount by selecting them and pressing the info button). They may not breed much if they are packed too tightly, by themselves, off of grass, or newly born. Animalshave a lifespan of about 3 days (unless they are loyal dogs). Pet dogs can be useful for herding farm animals. If you find a wild dog feed it some raw meat and it will follow you. You can say commands like ‘come’ or ‘stay’ to direct your dog.
Use a bucket to get milk from a cow, or shears to get wool from a sheep. Chickens will molt feathers on grass when they are between 10-30% full. Being on grass naturally gives farm animals an average amount of food. You can feed them manually by dropping their favorite food close to them: Worms for chickens, and lettuce or tinder for cows and sheep.
Sometimes animals drop seeds, or you can find them by exploring and foraging. Different plants may have unique methods of harvesting or planting. For instance you have to drop a potato in dirt to plant it, rather than using a seed.
Watering plantsand increasing your farming skill will improve your chances of plants growing successfully. If a seed is planted next to a water tile it is considered watered. This is easier than using a bucket. You will always get a seed back from a plant even if it failed to grow and withered. You might want to dig a channel of water to plant a row of seeds next to. When a plant grows it has a chance to dry up a nearby water tile depending on your farming skill.
Tilling will create dirt patches faster than digging with a shovel.
Cooking
You can cook most food items on a fire or fire pit to get a big nutrition bonus. When the fire is lit (drop wood to add fuel) you can face it and drop the uncooked food to place it on the fire. After a number of seconds you should notice its appearance change. Then you can hit action or space to pick up the cooked food and get cooking experience. You can cook large stacks at once. Make sure you don’t leave the food on the fire too long or it may burn up!
When you get a cooking pot you make make more advanced dishes with spices. Spices can be found from spice bushes and give certain buffs. You just put the empty pot on a fire, drop all your ingredients in, wait a few minutes and see what dish comes out.
You can extend the meal’s nutrition, expiration date, buff potency and duration depending on the ingredients, cooking time, and skill. So with the right technique you could create a special dish that completely fills your hunger bar, gives you 2.5x experience, +5 to all skills, and +3 regen/second for over an hour! The dish itself can last for a month before going bad.
Around 20 seconds cooking time is the minimum and 10 minutes is optimum. 20 minutes or more may burn your dish (half effectiveness).
Buff duration is based off spice quantity, but the potency is based off of cooking time, skill, and diversity. Diversity is how many different types of ingredients you incorporated into your dish.
Meals of the same type will stack and average their nutrition/expiration together. Meals with buff effects do not stack.
Spices
You can forage spices from spice bushes, which are a rare spawn of the normal holly bushes you get tinder with. About 1 in 8 holly bushes become spice bushes.
Spices can be eaten raw for a small effect. To get the full benefit you should cook a full dish with them.
Coriander boosts HP regeneration
Pepper boosts experience gain
Caraway gives a speed boost or removes a slow
Honey boosts all skill levels for a time
Fishing
Fishing can give a lot of meat when you know where to go and have a decent fishing level. Make sure you have a fishing rod equipped and some worms as bait in your inventory. Find some deep water and swing your fishing rod. The quality of your cast will vary so sometimes you may want to recast the line if you aren’t getting bites.
In Galebrook there is a special ‘sweet spot’ that moves around occasionally. This area will give you more fish the closer you are to it. You have a chance to get a hint as to where the sweet spot is whenever you catch a fish, based on your fishing level.
Rafts
You can make a raft to go anywhere on water. Just stand on shallow water and drop the raft under you. It will try to take you in the direction you are facing, and if you change directions it will eventually shift to match you. When you hit action it will stop the raft in place, so you can fish or do other things until you turn again to push the raft.
Rafts will go over water, deep or shallow, whether you are on it or not. You can use this to transfer stacks of items or npcs down rivers.
How to get resources
Silver
Can be bought for 5 chicken feathers at the Newbie Store. You can also find silver while mining rocks, especially if you have some levels in mining and a good pickaxe. Many enemies drop silver, such as turtles, skeletons, leeches or other creatures in the underworld.
Gold
Can be found while mining rocks with a good mining level and pickaxe, though it’s rare. Sometimes you can find a special gold rock to mine which has a higher chance to give gold pieces. There are always some gold rocks to be found underground, or in desert areas. Purple Chaos chests in the underworld give gold but spawn some enemies as well. Certain creatures like hornets or ghosts will give gold as a rare drop. Quill beasts have gold as a more common drop if you can slay them. Do not try to duplicate gold at altars, you may end up losing it!
Ore
Different ores can be obtained from big grey rocks found mainly in the desert or underworld. The higher your mining skill and better your pickaxe the more successful you will be at obtaining ore. Black rocks and Gold rocks also give ore. Malachite can be turned into copper, Cassiterite to tin, and Hematite to iron.
Obsidian
Used in weapons and arrow towers, can be found mining the black rocks in snow areas (north Galebrook) or in the underworld.
Clay
Isn’t particularly rare but requires a shovel and some water. The best way to find clay is to find shallow water next to deep water and keep digging in the shallow water to change it from deep to shallow over and over again.
Water
Having water around is valuable for farming and other things. You can dig a stream of water using a shovel. Just find a deep patch of water (one you can’t walk through) and dig next to it until a shallow patch of water appears. Then keep digging until the shallow water turns into deep. Then move one tile away and start the process again. You can also transport players, npcs, or items on rafts using water.
Gems
Mined at crystal rocks in the underworld and are easier to find the deeper you go. They can be used to add skill, damage, or defense bonuses onto any item that you can equip.
Crafting items and equipment
Most things can be made from the build menu, as long as you have the ingredients listed from the info button. Your crafting experience will go up based on how many materials you use. Some items are crafted with a process rather than the build menu.
Mud
Can be made by placing the dirt on the ground and dumping water on it. You can get dirt from digging and dump water on it by filling a wooden bucket with water and using it next to a tile with dirt on it.
Dyes
You need to forage dye plants from dye bushes found scattered around Galebrook. The bushes have yellow flowers and can be planted for your own use. There are 3 colors: blue, red, and yellow. To make the actual dye you fill a bucket with water and place it on the ground and then drop the dye plant on it and pick up the bucket.
Yarn
Build a spindle from wood and collect wool from sheep (using shears is more efficient than slaying the sheep). Have the wool in your inventory and equip the spindle. Hold the action button or space to start spinning the wool into yarn.
Knitting light armor
Create some knitting needles and equip them to see new options in your build menu. Light armors will take yarn and sometimes dye. Once you have the ingredients select knit from the build menu and it will store the pattern in your knitting needles. Then you need to hold the action button or space to attempt knitting the pattern. You will probably fail for a few attempts depending on your knitting skill and the difficulty of the pattern but it will give good experience regardless.
Copper & Tin
To make copper you need malachite, and tin requires cassiterite. Make a clay bowl and drop it on the ground underneath you. Then drop the desired ore into the bowl. Place the bowl on a lit fire or fire pit by dropping it the same way you cook meat. Eventually the ore will melt and you can take the clay bowl which will give you some metal bars.
Bronze
Making bronze is the same smelting process as above but you need to drop both tin and copper bars in the clay bowl. The resulting bronze quantity will be an average of the amount of tin and copper. Making one at a time will give you more smelting experience but also take longer.
Iron
Iron requires hematite and charcoal to be placed in a bloomery. You can only place 10 of each until the bloomery is full. You will need to activate the bellows next to the bloomery in order to create the iron bars.
Building a House
One of the first things you will want to build is a house for yourself to keep your items safe and protect you from the wild. It can be a simple structure with a few wooden walls to start. Building floor tiles allows you to keep items on the ground, otherwise those items decay after 10 minutes. It’s optional to build floor tiles under your walls. If you have enough gold you can rent a house in Market Square to keep your things safe, and then you don’t have to keep your walls repaired.
Wellington is a good town for casual or new players to build a home as you can’t be raided or attacked by players there. However it costs myst to build and repair structures in Wellington, so if you don’t mind the risk you can try building in Galebrook instead.
When building a house make sure to start small and simple, especially if you are by yourself. Otherwise repairs and tower costs will take more of your time.
Roads make players walk faster while traveling on them. It’s nice to have a road from your house to an area with resources. Roads and empty floor tiles decay over time depending on their quality. Floor tiles wont decay unless they are next to a non-blocking nature tile or cave wall. Make sure you completely fill your house with floor tiles, if you leave any exposed nature tiles you may have something (or someone) spawn into your home later on.
Structures take about four hits to destroy by the player who built them, but much longer if taking damage from other players. If someone builds a structure directly next to your structure you can destroy it as if it was your own.
When equipped, certain weapons (like hammers) will ignore interactive objects like doors and destroy them instead.
When you have a repairing skill of 10 or more you can use repair kits to fix up to 6 structures at a time. You must have flint in your inventory because it may drain some flint as you repair in this way. The area repaired is 3 wide and 2 deep, so you can double layer your walls or place towers and furniture up against your walls using this method.
Keeping your items secure with locks
Every house in Galebrook can be broken into, and probably will be breached at some point. So it’s important to know how to secure your items in case a thief does get in. The best way is with locks.Locks can be picked up at any time by you or your tribe members, but not by thieves.
Locks are especially effective with gold padding because they can secure your items 100%. Here is how it works: Say you want to secure 1000 stone and a rare armor item you found. You decide to use 5 gold to pad the lock with. So you drop your gold, stone, armor, and then set the lock on top by using it. If a thief happens to breach your defenses and loot your locked items they will only be granted 2 gold pieces, and then the lock will be closed to looting for 24 hours. When the gold runs out (after 3 days in this example as it will give 1 on the last day) then the lock will give out 1 random item type at a time.
So based on how much gold you put down you can determine the number of days you want your items to be secure while you aren’t around. Note that only 6 item types can be secured per lock, so you will need another lock if you have more items than that. You can use 1 gold per lock as 24 hour insurance for all your items. With basic home defense locks are a cheaper option to secure your items than renting a house in Market Square.
If you have a shop you can use locks to protect your inventory. The lock and any gold padding will not be for sale. So when placing your stock you can drop the gold first, then the items you are selling next, and then set the lock.
Defending your Home
Wood walls can be broken after a while so you will eventually want to upgrade to stone. Even stone walls can be breached but if you keep them repaired above 50% it will take some time to break them. Structures below half health take much more damage. You can build two layers of walls if you want even more defense but remember to leave room for repairs.
Arrow towers are your best defense. If you keep them filled with arrows they will shoot at any human player or Chaos NPC in their line of sight who isn’t part of your tribe. They will also shoot over walls at any player doing damage. Towers have a range of 6 tiles in a circle around them and will report the last 3 targets they fired at. Try to keep your base small enough that your towers will cover all sides of it. It’s also nice to keep small bases so your repairs are easy.
Inside your home you can place traps to give intruders a hard time. Shard traps will take a percentage of their health when triggered. Mud traps slow players down for a number of paces. These things can make them vulnerable to towers or your attacks.
You can also keep guard dogs if you have trained them up well. Though they are only a small deterrent since they will fall to any decent fighter and will only attack if someone has infamy or attacks them or their owner. Drop raw meat close to a dog to gain its loyalty.
If a thief has broken in and touched any items or replaced any walls you can tell by building a Scholars Lens. This item will show you the details of an object in front of you, like who the last person to hold the item was or who built the structure. It also works on players and creatures. It wont work if they cleaned their fingerprints by dumping water on the items, but it will always work for structures.
Remember any non-blocking tile that isn’t covered by a floor can be ‘roped’ in Galebrook. Meaning players can use an escape rope on a lower level to rise up through the ground as long as there is no floor tile to block them. Keep this in mind when designing your base. Make sure there is a divider between your farm and your living area.
You can also build homes or basements in the underground (the floor directly underneath Galebrook). As long as you have floor tiles in your underground home then players can’t build a staircase into it. Any structures built below the underground (in the Deep Cave and the Underworld) will disappear over time.
Eventually you will be able to acquire ‘dragon scales’. Using these with a bit of gold can dramatically increase the maximum health of your structures. This can create a huge barrier for anyone trying to break in.
Making a recall tile in your home can be useful so that when you use an escape lantern it will return you directly to your house rather than to a random spot.
Equipment
There are 5 different equipment slots. You can equip a primary weapon, armor, and a also a shield if the primary weapon isn’t two-handed. Finally, there are two accessory slots for miscellaneous stat-boosting items. Equipment may increase your damage or armor and have specific skill bonuses attached. Whenever equipment is created, there is a chance that it will have bonus stats based on your crafting skill. You may even find rare runes on equipment that give special bonuses. The more powerful a piece of equipment is the higher its level requirement.
Daggers attack quickly but do less damage against armor or structures. Swords do damage around you in an arc. Hammers are slow but do splash damage, extra damage to structures, and also ignore interactive structures like doors and signs so you can destroy them. Spears have a range of two tiles so they are good for kiting enemies and taking less damage. Maces like hammers will penetrate through most armor, but can be used one handed. Bows require arrows and line of sight but are great for keeping a good distance from your enemies.
Runes
Sometimes equipment will be generated with special runes depending on your questing skill and depth (or crafting/knitting skill if you made it yourself). Runed equipment will have an asterisk* at the end of its name and show you which runes are in effect when you equip it. Each rune has a power level of 1-5. Here are the current runes and their effects:
Ancient: 10% experience bonus per level
Glowing: 3% armor piercing per level
Humming: 8 bonus walking speed per level
Radiant: 6% myst bonus per level
Stained:1% critical hit chance per level
Gems and smithing
With an anvil, a hammer, and some gems you can add skill level bonuses onto your equipment. For example if you want to walk faster you can add extra exploration levels onto your accessories or weapon for example. For every bonus skill level you get +5% experience in that skill as well. So +6 exploration on an equip means you are getting +30% more experience towards your movement speed while walking around.
You can also add attack and defense bonuses and even give your equipment a custom name while it’s on the anvil. Here is how much you can add based on how many gems you use:

Each skill is represented by a combination of 3 gems. Any number of gems can be used for combinations as long as each of the required gems is used. So to add +1 exploration you could use 3 amethyst, 3 aquamarine, and 4 garnet. You can experiment with combinations to find the specific skill you want or reference the wiki here.
Your Smithing (sometimes called Enchanting) level and the number of existing gem slots determines the chance your equipment will break when you attempt to add a new slot. You will be told the break chance when you start the process. 2 handed weapons and removing gem slots have half the break chance.
Note that adding a property that already exists will overwrite it, rather than add to it.
Traits & Angel Dust
Traits are special bonuses your character is born with, and they randomize every time you die or reincarnate. For example, the ‘strong’ trait makes your character do more damage in battle and the ‘wise’ trait gives you an experience bonus. When you die you can gain Angel Dust based off of your leveland how long you’ve survived (the bonus caps after 30 days alive so it may be optimal to claim your dust around this time). More dust will unlock multiple traits at a time. Here are the possible traits you can get:
Alert: 15% bonus to dodge hits.
Deadly: 4% bonus to critical strike chance.
Fast: 60 bonus movement speed.
Healthy: Hunger bar drains at half speed.
Organized: 1000 bonus weight capacity.
Precise: 10% bonus to hit chance.
Quick: 100ms cooldown reduction on using weapons or items.
Reverent: 15% bonus myst gain.
Strong: 3 bonus attack.
Sturdy: 30 bonus max health.
Tough: 3 bonus defense.
Wise: 15% bonus experience gain.
Skills
Many actions in the game have a skill associated with them. The more time you invest in an action, the more itsskill level increases along with your success at performing that skill. For every 10 levels in a skill you fill a star slot. To get high level skills and therefore more experience potential you have to unlock more star slots with the ‘Skill Mastery’ upgrade in the upgrades menu.
Tribes
Working together will speed up projects and boost survival. For 5 gold you can build a tribe relic and lead a new tribe. After inviting new recruits you can promote them so they can invite people as well. Tribemates wont damage each other and share gates, towers, locks and traps. Promote your most trusted members to Elders and then if you leave the tribe they can take your place by promoting themselves. Leaders who are offline for over a week can be replaced by an Elder (sleeping doesn’t count, they must be offline or dead).
Death
When your health reaches zero, you die and you lose a bit of experience. Usually this is a level or so, but can be more at higher levels.
You also have small chance of dropping inventory items. It’s a much smaller chance if you are low level, you may not lose anything at all. Any items you drop will remain on the ground where you died for an hour, at which point they will expire and be placed into bone piles in the underworld.
When you respawn you get new traits and Angel Dust based on what level you were and how long it had been since your last spawn. With enough dust you will permanently unlock additional trait slots, so dying can be rewarding, especially at high levels!
Beware of killing other players, it will announce your name as the murderer.
Infamy
Certain criminal actions will build up a debuff called infamy. This helps deter crime and abuse of weaker players. This will add a skull icon next to a player’s name. While you have infamy you can click the debuff skull icon in the lower left to show you how many seconds you have left before it wears off.
You can’t reincarnate while infamous and if you have more than 1 minute you can’t gain skill experience. If you get large amounts you will notice reduced dodge and move speed, in addition to increased damage from towers. Other players can safely kill you without penalty, even on safe maps! You can’t enter Wellington while infamous and if you have over 2 minutes of it then it wont drain on safe maps. You can no longer use healing fountains, Admin towers will target you even over structures, and if you die you may end up in the deep cave instead of crossroads. Note that death loot drop rates are at their worst when infamous, regardless of level. There are various ways to build up infamy:
- Attacking an innocent (not infamous) player. This type of infamy wont exceed 30 seconds.
- Getting attacked by towers after damaging someone else’s structure. This won’t exceed 6 minutes.
- Murdering an innocent player. This can give you between 1 minute and 1 hour of infamy depending on how much weaker your victim is compared to you. Higher level fights have less penalties. Cannot exceed 8 hours.
- Looting locks. This adds 2 minutes each time.
- Going through doors you aren’t supposed to access. This adds 1 minute each time.
Infamy reduces over time naturally as your hunger bar drains. You have to eat something and expend energy or move if you want it to drain. If you don’t want to wait there are a couple other ways to get rid of it. You can find an underworld altar and drop some gold to pay it off. You can also die which removes 80% of your infamy though it wont reduce it below 1 hour.
Serenity
While you are in Wellington or Newbie Village you build up a peaceful status counter called Serenity. While you have this you are forced to keep /PvP mode off so you can’t attack or raid other players. This will eventually drain away if you spend time on unsafe (white named) maps. So for example visiting Wellington for 20 minutes means you need to remain peaceful for at least 20 mins afterwards until the serenity has faded away. The maximum amount of serenity you can build up is 24 hours worth, and it will give you a large discount on your myst costs for building in Wellington! Note that you will be allowed to turn /pvp on temporarily while in Wellington in order to destroy certain structures that don’t decay such us signs and beds. It will automatically turn back off after a few seconds or after you are done removing a structure. To check serenity amounts you can use a lens or try to turn on /pvp outside of Wellington to see your own amount.
Logging out
If you quit or close the browser window your character will remain in game for one minute, so try to be in a safe location. You can reconnect at any time. If you log out in a bed you made then your character will stay in game sleeping. This keeps you on the leaderboard and generates more Angel Dust when you die. Your character will regenerate health and automatically fight back while sleeping.
Best ways to Level
There are several different ways to level so you will have to find something that suits your play style. Some skills give more experience than others, like knitting, foraging or cooking for example, so you could focus those types of skills for quicker levels.
Planting seeds and harvesting is another way to level which produces lots of food and extra seeds as well. Mining, building, and repairing naturally give steady experience while you are working on your base.
For early levels you can gain a lot of experience doing simple quests and clearing mobs in Newbie Village or Newbie Cave. It’s an easy place to fish, cook, farm, and mine as well.
When you are level 10+ you can take a spear and gain good experience and myst from kiting Polar bears in north Galebrook. Kiting means running away and attacking at a distance to reduce the damage you take. Spears are good for this since they have 2 range. Just make sure the Polar bear is targeted with a yellow circle by clicking them. When you have enough defense you can kill snakes and wolves quickly with daggers.
When you are level 15+ one of the best and well rounded ways to level is by exploring the underworld. This will give you a lot of combat related experience spread across several skills and large amounts of myst for important upgrades. You may also find decent equipment and some rare resources. The trade off is that you may die from running into a nasty mob at a bad time. The deeper you go the higher the risk and reward so keep that in mind as you descend. You should go prepared, see the underworld section for more details.
Whichever method you choose make sure to invest myst in the Scholar upgrade so you are getting as much experience as possible. This goes for the Sage Wisdom upgrade as well so you can purchase upgrades faster. Also gain at least 1 level a day every day to build up your daily experience bonus.
Active Abilities
You start with the ‘Whirlwind’ ability at the beginning of the game. This is a special skill you can perform by clicking it (or pressing the hotkey). Abilities cost some myst depending on how powerful they are. They can be gained by reading books but have a small chance to be forgotten on use. Books also have a slight chance to fall apart after successfully learning the ability. All of this depends on your research skill. Books can be found in chests or from bosses. They can have different power levels. Here are the current abilities you might find:
Dash (3 levels): Rush forward a certain number of spaces, doing damage to anything you run into.
Disorient (3 levels): Swap places with a person or creature in front of you, doing damage.
Healing Rain (5 levels): Heals you and everything around you.
Shell (5 levels): Reduce all incoming damage to almost nothing for a short time.
Whirlwind (3 levels): Deals damage to everyone around you that can be reached. Damage is a multiplier of your current attack. Can crit and will penetrate armor based on glowing runes.
Frostbite (5 levels): Freezes anyone in front of you, slowing them down for a time but doing no damage.
Intimidate (4 levels): After a short cast time, silence nearby human players and cause creatures to flee for 6 seconds. Reduces the dodge of all targets.
Advanced Play
The Underworld
The easiest way to get to the underworld is through a hole in the Snake Pit. Find the stairs down to Snake Hazard area and go east to find the hole. You can also find or build a couple staircases down from Galebrook and fall through a hole in the Deep Cave. You may have to explore for a few minutes to look for holes, they spawn randomly.
Make sure to bring plenty of cooked food. A compass will be useful to keep track of stair positions (you will want to record them if you plan on making multiple trips). Ideally you can bring an escape lantern or some escape ropes to leave when you are ready. Otherwise you need to find a mercy statue to leave without dying. Mercy statues and escape lanterns disappear after use so keep that in mind if you are in a group. Escape ropes go up one level so just one will be enough if you plan on staying near floor 4.
The underworld is infinite, it will keep generating downwards. Mapping out where everything is can be somewhat useful but keep in mind each floor only has a lifetime of 7 days. Afterwards it will reset as long as there are no players on it.
This is a dangerous area, but can be very rewarding the deeper you go. Treasure chests, gems, and other things can be found. Gems can be used in smithing to improve the stats of any piece of equipment or give it special skill bonuses. Some equips come with runes for natural bonuses. You might find books to research new active abilities as well.
Treasure chests will become more common as you descend, and give better loot depending on your questing skill and current depth. Bone piles will give a random item that expired from someones death loot pile. The bone loot you find will be from a player whose level was the same or lower than your current dungeon depth, so high level loot is more common at lower levels.
Chaos chests are dark purple treasure chests that will give a guaranteed gold piece. They will also spawn a couple enemies and a Chaos NPC. The Chaos will teleport away to level up on the overworld so you only need to worry about the remaining enemies.
Altars can be used to increase the quantity of your items if you’re lucky. They have random effects like filling or emptying your hunger, spawning a random enemy, or disappearing. If the altar chooses to duplicate an item it will look for a random stackable item in your inventory and attempt to double it. If it’s gold it will steal it instead so make sure to drop your gold before using it. You can drop any other stackable items you don’t want the altar to duplicate but be ready in case a difficult enemy spawns. There is a limit to how much the altar will give you, and some items will give less than others.
Deep recall tiles will let you return to the underworld level you are at with a depth recall potion so you can continue your descent later. Dying will erase your deep recall location.
You can use a shovel to dig through floors though it may take several attempts. You can also dig through walls with a weapon or pickaxe.
There are many different monsters and most of them have unique abilities or behavior. It will take some trial and error to learn what everything does. For instance a goblin will attempt to steal something from you and run away. Slimes have a chance to divide while attacking. A reaper will follow you until you kill it, even all the way back to the overworld. They will drop a treasure chest on death. A creeper will go invisible until you are near it. Watchers will slow you down the more hits you take. Ghosts can phase through walls. A mage will attack you at range even over walls. A dragon will shoot powerful fireballs which melt everything in their path, but once killed will drop valuable dragon scales. Rust golems damage the durability of your items. Hive Soldiers will summon a few more of themselves when attacked. Haunted remains can drain a skill level of your top skill if you take repeated hits without fighting back. Dust devils have a ranged slow attack that can be difficult to escape.
Reincarnation and Ascension
When you reach your current level cap you can reincarnate to increase the cap by one level and gain a permanent blue skill star in your current top skill. Each blue star you collect gives you a permanent 5% boost to your experience gain and myst. You will reset to level 0 with no myst, upgrades, or skill experience but you keep your blue stars. Each blue star will give you 10 natural skill levels per star in the corresponding skill. You can’t lose blue stars through death, like you can lose yellow stars.
Your top skill for reincarnating is determined by how much (yellow star) skill experience you have, with a slight penalty for existing blue stars in that skill. Meaning you may need a slightly higher level in that skill versus other skills, to attain it as your top skill again. Make sure you invest some in the Lasting Legacy upgrade before reincarnating so you get a portion of your spent myst back for the next life. Your earned dust will be granted and your traits will be regenerated with any new trait slots.
An alternative to reincarnating is investing your myst in the Ascension upgrade which will add 5 to your level cap and can be upgraded infinitely at an increasing cost. This will let you use powerful equipment without boosting your cap through reincarnations.
A good long term strategy for a powerful character is to reincarnate a number of times and then invest in ascension using the myst and experience boosts from your blue stars.
Chaos
Beware of Chaos. They are released occasionally by players who find Chaos chests and are much more intelligent than a normal mob. They can level up on any creatures they find, seek out equipment, and use it. They hold lifelong grudges if you are a threat to them, and they may even try to break into your base. If you attack them, or sometimes if you are just level 60 or above they may put you on their hit list until they die. If you are below level 60 it would be best to leave them alone unless you are strong. When they reach level 40 they have the ability to create a stone hammer for themselves if they don’t have a better weapon already. They can break through bushes, trees, water, and hit walls like a normal player. They will leave locks alone. Towers are a good deterrent for them but they will leave and heal when wounded. They will only explore Galebrook and occasionally the underground. If you do manage to take one down they give decent myst and you will gain any equipment or gold they looted on their travels.
Costume Perks and Custom Pets
If you have supporter diamonds you can open the costume shop from the Appearance window and unlock custom looks. This will let you play as any creature or boss in the game in addition to many extra looks not normally seen in game.
Keep in mind that wearing unlocked costumes only works while you have supporter status activated, meaning you have to have at least 1 diamond in your account. Purchasing a costume will cost diamonds, so make sure you don’t spend all of them or you wont be able to wear the costumes you purchased until you acquire more diamonds!
Costume unlocks are permanent for your account, and they give benefits even when you don’t have supporter status. For example normally a player account will be deleted due to inactivity if it hasn’t logged in for 1 year, however if the account has any costumes unlocked it will be protected from deletion forever. Purchasing diamonds for the first time will unlock one free costume for your account.
You can also change your pet dog or cat to look like a custom creature, depending on how many costumes you have unlocked. Every time you reach a certain milestone of costume unlocks your Costume Tier will increase. The higher the Tier the more rare creatures you can turn your pet into. You start at Tier 1 with no unlocks and that allows you to change the breed of dog or cat you have. See the percentage of costumes unlocked needed to advance to each tier below:
Tier 1: 0% unlocked (Dog and cat breed changes)
Tier 2: 5% unlocked (Critters)
Tier 3: 15% unlocked
Tier 4: 30% unlocked (Companions)
Tier 5: 45% unlocked
Tier 6: 60% unlocked (Familiars)
Tier 7: 70% unlocked
Tier 8: 80% unlocked (Guardians)
Tier 9: 90% unlocked
Tier 10: 100% unlocked
You change your pet using a special type of Meat called Mystery Meat, dropped by certain creatures or otherwise found in the Underworld.
Your pet will choose from a random look at different tiers based on how much Mystery Meat you feed them. The amount of meat corresponds to the Tier you are aiming for. There’s usually 6 or 7 different looks per tier, which also change depending on whether it started as a cat or dog. So the more meat you feed your pet at a time the bigger and more rare the look (up to 10 meat in one stack).
Tier 10 is the largest ‘Guardian’ tier and requires 100% costumes unlocked. Remember you don’t need supporter active to access higher tiers as long as they were unlocked at some point it’s a permanent perk.
Not every costume is available to pets, but most of them are. Remember these are just cosmetic changes, your pet still needs to level its stats to become stronger. Cats and dogs turn into different things so it will take some experimentation to find your perfect pet.
Also remember to keep your pet’s loyalty fairly high by feeding it every now and then. If it drops too low then someone else may be able to steal it away by feeding it themselves, or it may eventually go wild.
